Since I mostly work for smaller businesses, I tend to be their Internet department. So, you can say I’m an Internet fire chief; I put out the fires. Thus, these companies rely on me for all things Internet. SEO, keyword, social media, hashtags, UX, accessibility, responsive design, AI, and code I have to know all these areas.
Some people think that makes me a jack of all trades and master of none. Actually, I consider myself a primary care physician. Although PCPs can handle almost anything, they know when to consult with others.
While I do work in all of these areas, my specialty is digital media content. And, because I understand all of the above items, they influence all of my content. This copy is a perfect example. While writing, I’m checking my Flesch Reading Score, my SEO, watching my passive voice, and sentence length. But I’m also making sure it’s a good read.
That what we call a rose by any other name
I call myself more of a digital designer than a web designer. Web design is associated mostly with creating and managing websites and their assets. Web designers are concerned with the underlying code, SEO, and dynamic design. Digital designers are concerned with all of these plus the various Social Media platforms, hashtags, mentions, AI, and animation design.
As a digital designer, in addition to website assets, I will create videos for various social outlets as well as websites. Video also has to adapt to the dynamic environment, accessibility, alt text, and SEO but also has to have correct close captioning a good soundtrack, and has to be concerned with bandwidth. I also at least enhance copy (text) for all outlets to ensure it has the correct SEO/hashtags. On top of all of this, the content has to be engaging and meaningful to the user
Professional Cat Herder
So that is who John Gruber is: an Internet content cat–herder. Keeping on top of everything he can and delegating any detailed work when necessary. Always aware, only a fool thinks he can do everything.
